Existing requirements to reliability of cargo lashings were compared. Their improved version was grounded on the basis of ultimate strength criterion and the technical and economic approach. Problems of statistical estimation of external forces acting on cargoes, lashing elements stresses, margin of strength and reliability based on the technical and economic approach are considered in view of separate work of rigid and flexible lashings elements. Some more rigorously and unified requirements are formulated as a result of the analysis of two accidents.
