Microstructure produced by drilling in as-quenched Fe-0.56%C steel was investigated. The produced microstructure consists of 4 layers in the depth; those are (from top surface) nanocrystalline (NC) layer, equiaxed submicron-crystalline (SMC) layer consisting of ferrite (α) and martensite (α') phases, recrystallized SMC α layer with a large number of cementite particles and over-tempered martensite structure layer. The NC layer has extremely high hardness and high thermal stability.
