To assess the relationship between productivity and office building design and operation. we analyzed the Building Assessment Survey Evaluation (BASE) data, a sample of 4,326 respondents in 100 randomly-selected U.S. office buildings. Associations were tested using proportional odds regression models and generalized estimating equations. Fifty-four percent of the respondents were defined as having high susceptibility (presence of doctor-diagnosed allergy, asthma or migraine), accounting for 71% of the 2,235 total lost days. We found. after adjustment for susceptibility and job dissatisfaction, significant association between lost days and the following workspace variables: crowdedhess. any operable windows. more than 10 feet to a window, recent water damage within 15 feet of workstation, temperature above or below 72-73°F, past fire damage. and recent renovations. Daily vacuuming vs. less frequent vacuuming was shown to be protective, as was bright light. Results underscore the importance of keeping an uncrowded, moisture-free, temperate, and clean workspace.
