Cold-formed steel roofs with thermal insulation are common in industrial buildings. In cold-formed steel roof systems, purlins are attached to sandwich panels by using self-drilling screws. The attached purlins are provided by lateral and rotational restraints. No design equations - without experimental tests - are available to estimate the rotational restraint in purlin-sheeting systems with thermal insulation. In this paper, by using validated finite element models, a design method is proposed for calculating the rotational restraint in cold-formed steel purlin-sheeting systems with thermal insulation foam.
