Occupants' perceptions and responses to energy use and indoor climate from the newly occupied passive houses in Norway: a questionnaire survey

To improve our knowledge about how energy performance was determined by interactions between occupants, behaviour and buildings systems, this study intends to investigate the actual occupants' perceptions and responses to energy use and indoor climate by a case study. 29 occupied passive houses in a newly built neighbourhood were studied, including 14 detached houses and 15 terraced houses. Energy use data were collected by recording monthly bills and a questionnaire survey with 55 questions was conducted. It show that more than half of targeted residents were unsatisfied with energy saving in spite of slightly higher annual energy bill compared with the Norwegian standard. Further results indicate that the low energy technologies applied in the passive houses achieved a good satisfaction of perceived indoor climate with a few exceptions. Main negative perceptions were room temperature in summer and daylight indoors. Responses were discussed for improving energy-efficiency consciousness of occupants.
