Exposure to fine (<2.0 μm in diameter) and ultrafine (<100 nm in diameter) particulate matter has been associated with adverse health effects. While indoor ozone (O_3) typically initiates terpene oxidation, the impact of nitrogen oxides (NO + NO_2 = NOx) indoors on secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation is not well understood. The observed particle count for α-terpineol/O_3 decreases significantly (up to 95%) in the presence of NO_2. Interestingly, the SOA mass from the a-terpineol/O_3/NO_2 system is larger suggesting formation of heavier species.
