Indoor radon concentrations in Portuguese schools: preliminary survey results

The aim of this preliminary survey is to assess indoor radon concentrations in public schools. Measurements were performed in 13 public primary schools located in Porto by using CR-39 passive radon detectors exposed for approximately 2 months. The anticipation of a considerable variability of radon concentration suggested the need to monitor concentrations in several rooms for different floors. Radon concentrations ranged from 56 to 889 Bq/m~3 (mean = 197 Bq/m~3). The results show that the WHO IAQ guidelines limit of 100 Bq/m~3 is exceeded in 92% of the measurements.
