CFD Modeling of Airborne Transmission in Indoor Environments: Prospective and Retrospective Approaches

Airborne transmission of respiratory diseases in indoor environments has been widely reported. It has been known that exposure to certain types of infectious particles leads to some level of risk. However, estimating exposure level requires precise data of particle concentration in a specific location for certain duration and is a special challenge. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provide the necessary information, but caution should be taken in using the result because how model parameters mimic the reality are uncertain. In this talk, an overview of modeling airborne transmission by risk assessment model with the help of CFD will be addressed. A prospective approach, that infection risk is assessed with known input parameters is discussed, followed by discussion of different validation approaches. Then a retrospective approach for unknown parameters determination by maximum likelihood analysis is evaluated. Our recent works in both numerical and experimental aspects predicting some outbreak cases will be covered.
