Associations of residential environment and lifestyle habits with eczema among preschool children in Shandong, China

Prevalence of eczema among children was rapidly increased in Shandong in recent years. It is urgent to reveal related factors. From January 2015 to April 2015, we conducted a cross-sectional study in two large cities (Ji-Nan and Ji-Ning) of Shandong province to study associations between home environments and children's health, as the CCHH (China, Children, Homes, Health) study has been conducted in Shanghai, Beijing and other Chinese cities. A total of 70 kindergartens were randomly selected in those districts and Parents of 12,300 preschool children were surveyed by a modified ISAAC questionnaire. In this paper, we analyzed 9,696 valid questionnaires among 3-6 year-old children, and chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were performed to investigate associations of residential environment and lifestyle habits with childhood eczema. We found that family history of atopy (FHA) (AOR, 95%CI: 2.36, 1.97-2.84), food allergy (FA) (4.30, 3.13-5.90), current home dampness-related exposures (CHDE)(1.77, 1.39-2.25), and early home dampness-related exposures (EHDE) (1.65, 1.39-1.95) could be risk factors for eczema. Moreover, father (1.74, 1.08-2.81) and/or mother's (2.10, 1.39-3.17) history of eczema, nuts (2.53, 1.01-6.30), beans (2.30, 1.08-4.87) and/or seafood (1.62, 1.13-2.32) allergy were also associated with eczema. We didn't find the association of duration of breastfeeding (DBF) with eczema, but the children who were first given formula or cereal no more than 6 months had significantly higher prevalence of eczema during lifetime-ever. Current and early pet keeping (CPK and EPK), family smoking (CFS and EFS), early home new furniture (EHNF), early home renovation (EHR) could arise a significantly higher prevalence of eczema, whereas the effect could be modified with adjusted potential confounders.
