Study of Acoustics Induced Deposition of Polydispersed Particles in an Acoustic Aerosol Removal System

Acoustic aerosol removal system is an innovative system compared to current systems such as fibrous filters and cyclonic separators. It also tackles the drawbacks of current systems that include; high pressure drop, bulky systems and intensive energy usage. In order to analyze and improve the acoustic aerosol removal system, a study that considers particle size distribution and input number concentration is needed, since the removal efficiency was found to be influenced by these two factors. Experiments were conducted in an air channel with two different sized particles, polydispersed test particles and seed particles, of various concentrations and concentration ratios. A three step numerical approach was also adopted in the investigation. Both experimental and numerical results showed, in general, that the removal efficiency was proportional to the ratio of seed particle concentration to test particle concentration. It was attributed the increment of the removal efficiency to the agglomeration with respect to the particle size and concentration. Hence, adding seed particles effectively increased the removal efficiency.
