A car-following experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of haptic feedback via the gas pedal on the processing of visual information from the driving scene. During the driving task visual stimuli were presented in the central and peripheral field of view of the drivers to which they had to react as quickly as possible. Two haptic feedback conditions were tested: force feedback and stiffness feedback. Drivers seemed to apply a 'maintain a constant pedal force' strategy during car-following with haptic feedback on the gas pedal. The type of haptic feedback influenced the reaction times to the presented visual stimuli.
