Difficulties still exist when following complex trajectories with a tunnel display. Improvement of the pilot manual path-following performance can be achieved by adding symbols to the display such as the flight-path predictor, which can be classified as a display augmentation. A different approach is to change the control characteristics of the aircraft, which can be classified as control augmentation. This paper describes an analytical as well as an experimental comparison between various display and control augmentation concepts. The experiment was conducted in the SIMONA Research Simulator of Delft University, a 6 degrees of freedom moving-base light simulator. Results indicate that control augmentation outperforms the display augmentation concepts.
