The Relationship of Interfacial Shear Strength to Composite Properties

This preliminary study examined two techniques for the measurement of interfacial properties. The first technique is a revised pullout method which compares the interfacial shear strength (ISS) to the modulus of rupture (MOR) for two different wood-plastic composites (WPC). Plastics used in this study were high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP). Compatibilizers used included maleic-anhydride polyethylene and maleic-anhydride polypropylene. A strong correlation between ISS and MOR was observed in a limited composition region. The second method investigated the use of the force-volume mode on the atomic force microscope to track the changes across the interphase in a wood-HDPE composite. Both methods have merit and could be useful in characterizing WPCs if they were more fully developed.
