Relevancy of semithin sections on the analysis of seminal damage, due to infection by Chlamydia and Mycoplasma, in couples with unsuccessful assisted reproduction

Material and Methods. To determine cytological alterations in semen infected by Chlamydia trachomatis and genital Mycoplasma sp, we studied 143 sub fertile patients from unsuccessful assisted reproduction treatment. The seminal sample was embedded in epoxy resin, obtained semithin sections toluidine blue stained, and analyzed with optical microscope (1000X).Results. The study on semithin sections allowed quantification and comparison of cytological characteristics of semen fluid from the patients grouped according with microbiological diagnostic, and confirmed the presence of alterations that result characteristics of patients with seminal infection, compared with non infected control group (p<0,00001).Conclusion. Semithin sections probed the presence of bacterial particles of Chlamydia and Mycoplasma inside and adhered to inflammatory cells, epithelial cells, immature cells and spermatoza. As well, phagocytes and epithelial exfoliated cells from the seminiferous tract as well cytoplasmic fragments, immature germ cells were present, associated to infected sperm with rolled flagellum and thickened flagellum by incoming bacteria to the cytoplasm.
