As management of a service operation, we are always looking for ways to reduce the turn-a-round time for the customer, increase profitability for the organization, and maintain a high quality level in our service. This paper deals with using a manufacturing tool for identifying and eliminating waste in the Calibration Laboratory. Lean Manufacturing is a systematic approach to identifying and eliminating waste. Normally associated with manufacturing processes, the concepts lend themselves well to service based processes as well, including calibration. Implementing the lean manufacturing approach will improve the overall performance of a calibration laboratory. Overall performance includes the turn around time, quality of work, and profitability.
