As petroleum companies throughout the world work to improve their understanding of potential contributions to human induced climate change, developing an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions is an important step for each company. In order to achieve consistent, meaningful inventory data, it is important that petroleum companies have consistent definitions of what is included in the inventory, and use consistent methodologies for calculating their emissions. The International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA), the American Petroleum Institute (API), and the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) developed the Petroleum Industry Guidelines for Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions to help define the boundaries of the inventory for petroleum companies. The guidelines development effort has been coordinated with API's Compendium of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimation Methodologies for the Oil and Gas Industry, which provides a consistent set of emissions estimation methodologies for the petroleum industry. A calculation tool, the SANGEA™ software system is also available, and it facilitates development of inventories that are consistent with the Industry Guidelines and utilizes the methodologies in the API Compendium. This paper will present highlights of the Industry Guidelines, the API Compendium, and the calculation tool as parts of an overall guidance of how to develop a consistent, meaningful estimate of emissions from petroleum industry operations.
