A new software package SimWeld which is under development within German National Centre of Excellence for Process Simulation at Aachen University,SimPRO (www.rwth-aachen.de/simpro) is presented.When developing SimWeld,a special emphasis is given to the module structure of the package in order to make it flexible and readily extensible on different welding processes.Currently,the modules for the simulation of welding with a consumable electrode in shielding gases for steels and aluminium alloys are elaborated.The physical and mathematical models of process and numerical solution procedure are described. For calculations of arc parameters,e.g.heat input,heat distribution and arc pressure,an improved model of arc and of droplet detachment was developed.The model was adapted for conditions of pulse welding with modern digital power sources.Comparison of modelling results for weld bead geometry with experiments shows adequacy of models and confirms validity of the accepted assumptions.The program package can be used for teaching purposes at universities and the educational centres,and also for technological preparation of welding production.
