European Molecular Imaging: A Nuclear Medicine's Perspective

As professor Peter Ell mentioned in his highlight lecture of the 2004 Congress of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine in Helsinki (European Journal of Nuclear Medicine 2005; 32: 113-126), several major technologies are entering use in medicine at present: stem cell therapy, DNA chips and micro arrays, nanotechnology, molecular multimodality imaging, gene therapy. While isotopes can play a role in each of these areas, nuclear medicine is an active partner in most of these exciting fields and is considered an extraordinary opportunity for research investment. It has both diagnostic as well as therapeutic branches, and has its roots in both molecular biology and cell biology.
