Introduction: Red blood cells (RBCs) labeled with ~99mTc are commonly used in the evaluation of cardiac function, gastrointestinal tract bleeding, red blood cell volume and splenic sequestration. Stannous ion is frequently used as a reducing agent in the labeling of RBCs. A proposed mechanism for this labeling is that once the stannous ion (Sn~(2+)) and the pertechnetate (~99mTcO_4~-) reach the interior of the RBC, the radionuclide is reduced and mainly housed in the (3-chain of hemoglobin. Three methods exist for labeling RBCs with ~99mTc: the in vitro method, the in vivo method and the modified in vivo method (1-3).
