Researchers in the open literature have focused on developing methods to estimate the lung diffusing capacity (DL) both theoretically and experimentally because of the continuous interest in understanding the gas transfer phenomenon of respiration. The RF-method (Roughton and Foster, 1957) allows the prediction of the alveolar-capillary membrane resistance and the total capillary blood volume from two physiological measurements of DL at two different O{sub}2 tensions. The morphometric (M) method (Weibel, 1970) emerged as another alternative to the RF-method towards linking DL to the local parameters that influence the alveolar respiration.
