THE USAGE OF REFUSE DERIVED FUEL FROM URBAN SOLID WASTE IN CEMENT INDUSTRY AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL

As world population increases, daily garbage generated by human beings also goes up. Unfortunately it is no more possible to eliminate this solid garbage problem via the recycling system of the nature. Labouring in this field is a permanent investment and contributes also to national objectives of our country. Cement industry has a key role in solving garbage issues. It offers to save fossil fuels and helps to protect environment by using different wastes as alternative fuels. Hence, eliminating calorific wastes by using them as alternative fuels has been a widespread method in cement industries in most developed countries. Consumption of this kind of waste in this manner has reached 60-70% in European Union countries. If Turkey signs Kyoto Protocol, recycling of these wastes will also produce vital advantages for reducing CO_2 emissions. In order to investigate the potential of alternative fuels derived from urban solid waste as secondary fuels in cement industries, TUBITAK MRC (Marmara Research Centre), ISTA Co. (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Environmental Protection and Waste Materials Valuation Industry and Trade Co.) and AKCNSA Co. (Cement Industry and Trade Co.) have been executing a joint project. Many plants are engaged in similar activities in different EU countries. The garbage diversity depends on the country and that in Turkey is not expected to be typical either. Therefore in the frame of this project, representative samples from available garbage will be collected and analyzed; types of machines and equipments will be identified according to the results obtained. The fuel derived from burning waste in furnace will be analyzed and the influences on cement rotary kiln processing will be examined in detail. Identifying the optimum RDF (refuse derived fuel) charging ratio without exceeding the emission limit values given in notifications and regulations will be the next step. Successful results of this project would be a good example for municipalities and cement industries and economic profit would be achieved.
