Relationship between dust transportations on the slopes and weather conditions in the foot areas of the Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains around the Taklimakan Desert in the 2002 and 2003 springs

Dust transportations (DT) on the slopes of the Tianshan Mountains and Kunlun Mountains under anabatic wind in daytime were evaluated by visibility, wind speed and wind direction, and were related with weather conditions at the foot areas from March 1 to May 31 of 2002 and 2003. The results were suggested as follows. 1) The total amount of DT in the Kunlun Mountains was three times larger than those in the Tianshan Mountains in the same periods. 2) As large amount of DT was evaluated in the mountainous areas, dust might surround over a part of the desert including mountainous areas and its foot areas, because good relations were found between DT in mountainous areas, and both visibility and appearance ratio of weather codes 06 - 09 in the foot areas. 3) After big dust events were recorded in April 16-17,2003 in both Alar and Hotan in the foot areas, a huge amount of dust might have emitted, and surrounded most of the Taklimakan Desert for several days.
