As-synthesised zeolite A has been succesfully used as a template for the preparation, viachemical vapour deposition, of well ordered zeolite-like carbon materials that exhibithigh surface area (up to 2535 m2/g) and high hydrogen storage capacity (5.3 wt% and2.3 wt% at 20 bar and 1 bar respectively). Carbon materials prepared at 800 and 850 °Care non-graphitic and retain the particle morphology of the zeolite templates. Carbonprepared at 900 °C contains some graphitic domains (as evidenced by XRD patterns) andirregular particles that are dissimilar to the zeolite template particles. The use of as-synthesized (rather than calcined) zeolite A significantly improves the carbon yield andreduces the number of steps in the preparation of the templated carbons.
