The similarities and differences between ultra wideband (UWB) frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and step frequency continuous wave (SFCW) are explored. An analytical approach shows that the difference is a small phase error for FMCW. The differences in efficiency and implementation challenges are shown using a radar system capable of running both waveforms. The increased receiver dynamic range of gating the transmitter and receiver for these waveforms are illustrated with the same radar.
