Today's society is characterised by two important aspects: the desire for communication and the pursuit of personal mobility. The latter causes a sharp increase of individual traffic (Picture 1). In addition, truck traffic is rising steadily. All causes an increasing demand on the capabilities of the driver of a passenger car. Nevertheless, the number of accidents - particularly fatal accidents - is declining. The reason, besides the availability of better rescue system and advanced medical care, lies in improved vehicles with continuously improved concepts of safety. Today hardly any accident is caused by a mechanical breakdown in the conventional meaning. Although quite a number of older cars are involved in accidents that can be ascribed to malfunctioning breaks or to old tires. However, these defects can not be blamed on the vehicle - they are within the responsibility of the driver respectively the owner of the car and a poor service.
