FreedomCAR Advanced Battery Research for Transportation (ABRT) Program. 1. The FreedomCAR Program is developing hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to reduce the US dependence on foreign oil supplies 2. DOE's Advanced Technology Development (ATD) Program addresses the three barriers that remain for batteries in hybrid electric vehicles - (1). high cost, short calendar life, and poor abuse tolerance. 3. Technical goals are to (1). Identify life-limiting mechanisms for failure of lithium-ion ceils during abuse and aging (1). Developidentify new materials to improve cell performance (2). Find solutions to safety and abuse tolerance concerns 4. Involves 5 US National Laboratories (1). Argonne National Lab, Brookhaven National Lab, Idaho National Lab, Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and Sandia National Labs.
