Initial investigation is the most important step in performance problem- solving. Incorrect estimation of the cause of a problem renders any succeeding efforts to identify and resolve it meaningless. This paper proposes using event trace-based performance measurement for initial investigations because it can produce performance indices correlated with a transaction. Application of this approach to a performance problem related to multiple file read operations led to efficient estimation and resolution of the problem, which was helpful in avoiding meaningless countermeasures. Without this measurement, even experienced engineers had trouble estimating the cause of the problem.
