Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have been trying to develop environment-friendly engines with minimum air pollutants emission. Post treatment technologies, as well as modification of combustion, have been investigated for particulate matter (PM) abatement in the exhaust gas from diesel engine. The purpose of this study is to develop PM adsorption reactor to apply marine and power stationary diesel engines. Several kinds of silica and alumina were tested as PM adsorbent. PM removal test was conducted in the test engine of 120 Nm~3/hr flow rate. The preliminary results showed that PM in the exhaust gas was successfully removed and the pressure drop was slightly increased. Used adsorbents were regenerated by burning out at high temperature above 350°C. The regenerated adsorbents had almost the same PM adsorption capacity and surface morphology as fresh ones except alkali metal deposition. PM removal test was also conducted in the single cylinder test engine of 600 Nm~3/hr flow rate. The PM removal efficiencies and pressure drops were measured according to the adsorbent sizes and exhaust gas flow rates. The optimum regeneration temperature for the used adsorbents was also studied.
