More than 230 million tons of municipal solid wastes (MSW) are generated in the United States annually with 57% of that waste disposed of in MSW landfills. In the past, under Subtitle D "dry tomb" landfill design (40CFR Part 258) to minimize odor generation and contamination of groundwater, landfills were mandated to minimize the moisture content of the solid waste in the landfill. This requirement was relaxed after realizing that the degradation of the solid waste is enhanced by adding moisture Recently, the US EPA promulgated the Research, Development, and Demonstration Permits for MSW Landfills (RD&D rule) in 2004 (FR 2004) under which permits are issued to allow the addition of non-hazardous industrial liquids to MSW landfills. Currently, there are not clear guidelines on the permissible sources of moisture as this could be water, or landfill leachate, but also various liquid wastes such as wastewater from sewerage systems, slaughterhouses, dairy factories, soft drink industries, pharmaceutical industries, and food processing wastes. However, there is insufficient information about the effect of some of these industrial liquids on landfills. Industrial liquid waste addition can be a major source of moisture particularly in some arid environments, but also in other MSW landfills. A study was conducted to determine the effect of a carbonated off-specification beverage as a surrogate for soft drinks industrial waste.
