The resistance functions used by UFC 3-340-02 for reinforced masonry walls are currently being updated to be more consistent with the fundamentals outlined by the "Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures" (ACI 530/530.1-08) reported by the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC). However, the resistance function for typical reinforced masonry walls will still be based on a bilinear elastic-perfectly-plastic response. This approach lacks the capability of identifying the deflection at which cracking of the masonry occurs. More importantly, it also cannot identify the deflection at which yielding of the reinforcement occurs. The resistance function presented here is based on a numerical integration along the height of the wall of a classical piecewise-linear moment-curvature diagram. This approach produces a nonlinear resistance function that explicitly defines the cracking and yielding deflections. It is also shown that the bilinear approach used by UFC 3-340-02 is not necessarily conservative, which could lead to incorrect conclusions and/or erroneous designs.
