Foundations of Neurological Surgery: The State of the journal and Documentation of Surgical Methods

In consideration of the foundations of neurological surgery, our journals hold an unusually weighty status. They serve as the principle repositories of our knowledge; they provide a basis for our professional actions. They function as our major forum for open exchange of new ideas and the critique of old methods. Perhaps most importantly they provide a compass for the navigation of our future. Peer reviewed literature remains the premier "coin of the realm" in our knowledge base. Certainly the importance of our journals cannot be overestimated and our editors, review boards, staffs and publishers desire admiration and applause for the hard work and difficulties that they endure to provide this vital resource.At the 2003 Annual Meeting of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, I was asked by the Congress leadership to present remarks on the Journal's current activities and status. This review proved helpful for many and would seem to serve a fitting conclusion to this volume and 2003.
