We have developed small-diameter optical fibers with cladding diameter and outer coating diameter of 80 μm and 125 μm, respectively. In order to investigate the bending property, the numerical aperture (NA) of the newly developed single-mode (SM) fibers was varied from 0.12 to 0.22. For a small-diameter optical fiber with the same index profile at the core region as that of a conventional SM fiber, the bending loss was similar to that of a conventional SM fiber. For a fiber with a high NA (0.22), bending loss was less than 0.1 dB at the bending radius of 5 mm. The newly developed fibers also showed good environmental reliability.
