Immunomodulatory preparations are primarily indicated for the treatment of chronic, low-grade bacterial or viral infections rather than acute infections. The mechanism of action of non-specific immunostimulation is macrophage activation and productionof proinflammatory cytokines. Stimulation of systemic immunity can be documented for several days after administration with most commercial preparations; however, prolonged immunostimulant activity is not anticipated.
