In the NaRoMI study, the relationships between road traffic noise and work noise and the incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) were studied. A total of 4115 patients were included in the case-control study. The focus here is on the statistical inter-relationships of annoyances from different noise sources on the health outcome. In the full statistical models all annoyance variables were included simultaneously. Road traffic noise in males and aircraft noise in females were significant predictors of MI. The sum score and the maximum score of annoyance from all environmental noise sources did not show significant associations. To assess possible odds-ratio modifications, pairs of noise factors were treated with their main effect terms and interaction terms in the statistical analyses. There was not much indication of effect modification that could be attributed to multiplicative interaction between the noise annoyance factors on the odds scale. Combined indicators of global noise annoyance can obscure effects of single noise sources on health outcomes, when they are calculated on the basis of individual noise annoyance ratings. Different noise annoyance factors should be treated as independent risk factors in the statistical model.
