THE USE OF POLYMERIC LIQUID CRYSTALS (PLC’s) IN HIGH PERFORMANCE COATINGS

This paper describes a novel colorant technology with optically variable color capabilities based on cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) moieties. It will review what constitutes a liquid crystal, examine various phase structures, and describe the method used to manufacture the resulting thermally and chemically stable polymeric structures. The various optical, physical, and chemical characteristics are reviewed including data related to weathering for high performance applications. It will be shown that these polymeric colorants are suitable for incorporation into various coating technologies including high performance. A review of the current markets that are utilizing such materials will be given to illustrate how these novel materials are being used as a new tool to provide a dynamic capability for brand awareness and protection.
