To create a reliable database concerning double skin composite fuselage design, various full-scale test articles are being manufactured and tested until the end of 2007. This database is needed to facilitate decisions to introduce double skin design into the technology portfolio of future AIRBUS programs. For mission success, the development of new materials & processes is one of the key issues. Typical obstacles of materials and processes, which are available today, have to be overcome. Emphasis of the developmental efforts lies on new core materials, like e.g. folded structures, and advanced bonding- and assembly technologies. The test articles VeSCo (Ventable Shear Core) are realized at Airbus Stade in the Composite Technology Center CTC; the panels dubbed SoFi (Stringers outside, Frames inside) are manufactured in cooperation with the partner company MAN Technologie in Augsburg within the German Research Framework LuFo III as a substantial part of AIRBUS' efforts to introduce composite fuselage solutions.
