THE APPLICATION OF GMS REMOTE SENSING IMAGE SERVER FOR MOBILE DEVICES

We have developed a GMS (Greater Mekong Sub-Region) remote sensing image server last year. It has been serving LANDSAT and NOAA images at full resolution for 6 GMS countries ( Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and a part of China and Myanmar ). The remote sensing image server was developed to serve remote sensing images not only for browsing on a web viewer but also as back ground image on which user's vector data can be overlaid across an internet connection using OGC compliant Web Map Service (WMS) technology. The development includes both the interoperability between multiple data source and type, and the improvement of the speed of the service. Two main algorithms of tile index and multiple resolution algorithms enable the speed of the service to be fast enough to serve the data over the internet. Using this GMS remote sensing image server, an application on mobile devices was developed so that remote sensing images of GMS countries can be browsed from any field site. The mobile computer device is a new technology and powerful for an outside work, but it is impossible to store and operate with big amount of remote sensing images on itself. With GPRS technology, a mobile phone connection to an internet can be established. Thus a WMS connection to a remote sensing image server is possible even when users are at field sites. Users at field site can utilize the remote sensing image as a background image on which local data such as GPS data or GIS data on the server can be displayed via a mobile phone connection.
