Economical Steel Lightweight Technology For Body Systems Of The Next Generation

The NSB~R concept redefines the potential for lightweight steel construction. By combining innovative steel section design with conventional shell construction, a dramatic reduction of weight in the body-in-white under large scale mass production conditions is demonstrated. The additional costs per kg of weight are on a level of only 0.3 euros. This makes steel an attractive economic alternative to other lightweight materials. The NewSteelBody offers many new ideas, which can be applied for a wide range of customized projects. Within these projects the different customized aims of a development process can be defined and an adaptation of the NSB~R-Technology is possible. Influenced by the intelligent mixture of closed profiles and conventional shell components, if is feasible to start a (partial) implementation without the necessity to change the whole manufacturing processes. Consequently, the car manufacturers are able to gain experience step-by-step and get familiar with these new technologies. In summary, the NewSteelBody is a further development, which began with the ULSAB and demonstrates the possibility of modern steel grades and technologies in the body-in-white. The NSB~R with its new body concept sets a new milestone concerning the lightweight potential of modern steel.
