Exact ray tracing simulations of lidar signals were performed considering all optical elements of a lidar system and the spatial inhomogeneity of the sensitivity of Hamamatsu H5783-06 photomultiplier modules. Unacceptable lidar signal deviations up to 90% were found with conventional focusing optics, and negligible deviations below 1% with improved optical setups.
