Fragment Simulating Projectile (FSP) experiments using tungsten alloy were conducted to assess fragment mitigation effectiveness of some ductile and brittle materials. The 0.66 gram projectiles, with different length to diameter (L/D) ratios, were fired at velocities of 1000 - 2000 m/s using a 0.50" smooth bore gun. The protection materials were ranked in terms of depth of penetration into ductile witness targets. Comparisons with Autodyn 2D calculation show good agreement with experiments into ductile materials, and some success was achieved in predicting the mitigation effectiveness of brittle materials. The results of predictive calculations and experimental data are reported.
