Parameters involving the design and construction of engineered landfill were considered for Port Harcourt Metropolis, Nigeria. Leachate, landfill gas management, reactor cells for waste digestion and resource recovery were developed. Fifteen years design life for 7500 tons/day of waste generated was considered. Cost of collection of waste from one node to the other, wastes processing at community composting plant, mechanical composting plant, waste disposal at engineered landfill which make up the total cost of municipal solid waste management were analyzed. Comparison with the existing practice of waste collection and disposal at borrow pit/dump site shows not only considerable reduction in cost; but also minimize health hazards associated with the present practice in the metropolis.
