The study described and analyzed the profile of the solid waste and waste deposition sites in the watershed creek of Cagayan de Oro City. Specifically this assessed the a) physico-chemical properties of the wastewater including heavy metals and b) water plankton composition as water pollution indicator. General findings revealed that more than ten types of solid waste were disposed by local residents with an average of 2-5 kg daily along the creek. There were five heavy metals determined (Fe, Cu, Zn, Ph, Cd) and iron obtained the highest level of concentration (162.252 ppm). Water pH value decreases in the downstream areas as evidenced by the foul odors with sulfuric acid smell. Water planktons identified were dominated by Chlorococcus and Nitzhia spp. which are pollutant-tolerant species and Drocentmm compressum and Microcystic aeroginosa, red tide-causing dinoflagellates. The study recommends that periodic sampling will be conducted to monitor the trend of heavy metal and the presence of mercury. Extensive monitoring for solid waste disposal and water analysis should be done to further assess the extent of pollution in the creek for rehabilitation.
