Elastic porous bodies were fabricated from the self-organized hydroxyapatite/collagen nanocomposite fibers by lyophilization with the use of collagen as a binder. The porous bodies obtained rapidly absorbed water droplet on them and composed of interconnected pores. The pore size was depending on freezing temperatures. The porous bodies demonstrated sponge-like elastic property when wetted and 70 kPa in tensile strength. The cell attachment and resorption with osteoclastic cells for the porous bodies examined by animal tests were the same as those for the compact bodies of hydroxyapatite/collagen nanocomposite. These mechanical and biological properties provide easier handling to operator and better cell invasiveness in both in vitro and/n vivo than those of "hard" porous ceramics and "soft" collagen sponges.
