To avoid fractures of alumina ceramic, we developed a total knee prosthesis with zirconia ceramic femoral component designated bisurface knee prosthesis, by the cooperation of Kyoto University and Kyocera Co. The prosthesis has a unique ball-and-socket joint in the midposterior portion of the femoral and tibial components, which functions as a posterior stabilizing cam mechanism and causes femoral rollback. We reported at Bioceramic 14 that the new zirconia prosthesis worked as well as alumina one in a short term. In this paper we reported the results of 4-year follow-up. We had good results for clinical and X-ray examinations at 4 year-follow-up without any revision.
