Tyres are gaining an increasing weight in the identification of the main causes of vibration in motorcycles, cars and trucks. Under this point of view, the study carried out on tyre vibrational behaviour becomes of fundamental significance. The vibration of a tyre rolling on the road shows a larger and richer spectrum than the one produced by the sidewall of a standing tyre excited by an electro-dynamic shaker. This is the first step in the study of all vibrations in a rolling tyre. The study of vibrations, in turn, is necessary to identify the sources of all the mechanism of noise emission. The tread block can be modelled like a cantilever beam. The results obtained confirm this assumption. Two different experimental set-ups have been developed. The tests have been performed with an in-plane vibrometer with optical axis radial respect to the tyre: the tangential velocity has then been measured. The results of such tests, performed on five different tyres have been analysed and main measurement problems have been stressed.
