Tuberculosis as AIDS Defining Condition in Greece (1993-2003)

We analysed data reported to the Hellenic Center for Infectious Diseases Control through the years 1993-2003 in order to assess the incidence of tuberculosis as AIDS Defining Condition (ADC) compared to the incidence of PCP and HIV wasting syndrome in Greece through the years 1993-2003. From 1993 to 2003, 1581 AIDS cases were reported. Of them, 1331 were males and 250 were females. PCP was reported as ADC in 357 AIDS cases, while HIV wasting syndrome was reported in 336 AIDS cases. TB was reported as ADC in 221 AIDS cases with 161 cases being pulmonary and 60 cases being extrapulmonary. There is an abrupt increase in TB incidence after 2002 and then was the first time when TB becomes the most frequent ADC in Greece. Although continuous monitoring of the TB incidence as ADC is needed, evidence show that in the following years TB will become one of the three most frequent ADC in Greece.
