摘要

This paper reports briefly on the findings of the south African component of an evaluation of a HIV/AIDS home-based care (HBC) programmme for ex-miners implemented in three countries: South Africa, Lesotho and Mozambique. The main focus of the evaluation was the Eastern Cape, in particular the districts located in the former Transkei - that constitute some of the most impoverished and poorest parts of the Eastern Cape - from which miners were recruited to work in the gold mines. Of the former homelands, the Transkei is said to have the highest poverty rate in the country. On a regular basis mineworkers and other migrant workers who become ill or disabled as a result of HIV/ AIDS or mine accidents are repatriated to their communities. In these instances, their care becomes the responsibility of women (especially old women) and children who often have little or no access to appropriate resources or support. The total number of patients (and their families) who received HBC in the Eastern Cape at the timeof the evaluation was 259.
