The Phase Resonance and Phase Separation approaches to identifying structural dynamic systems are compared and contrasted. The discussion is focused on aspects relating to the testing of large structures, such as the Ground Vibration Tests performed on aircraft. The Phase Resonance methods are shown to have a number of significant advantages compared to the Phase Separation techniques that are used commonly; particularly when modes are close in frequency, high quality results are required, or when non-linearities are present. The main drawbacks when using Phase Resonance methods are the time and exciter placement considerations. It is envisaged that a combined strategy using both types of approach, would be the best test procedure to use.
