Large finite element models in coupled dynamic analysis can be replaced by simple equivalent models which are accurate and easy to use. The reduced models are obtained from a basis of modes derived from static and dynamic analysis. This basis is then used to generate an equivalent simplified finite element model containing standard components such as nodes, springs and point masses. The reduced model, which preserves a subset of its physical nodes, can be directly connected to other models for subsequent coupled finite element analysis. This paper first gives the formulation and implementation of the reduction technique. Next an industrial automotive application is presented using NASTRAN to demonstrate the technique's performance for coupled analysis.
