New high-resolution experimental data are reported on the linestrengths and self-pressure-broadened Lorentzian widths for the P_1(1)-P_1(10), R_1(0)-R_1(15), and P_2(13)-R_2(12) vibration-rotation lines in the fundamental and the first overtone absorption bands of HI. An improved dipole moment expansion as a function of the reduced nuclear displacement is generated and compared with the available ab initio calculations. A new set of the Herman -Wallis coefficients is obtained, which is in a better agreement with theory than previously published results.
